Neon

Neon is a managed serverless PostgreSQL service with autoscaling compute, branching, connection pooling and scale-to-zero. It supplies a database rather than a complete application hosting stack; the application and any separate authentication or storage services must be selected independently.

Good fit if

Permanent Free plan has no monthly fee or required card, 100 CU-hours/project, 1 GB database storage/project, 20 GB total account storage and 5 GB egress/project.

May not fit if

Free compute and egress limits can suspend compute until the next billing period; storage limits block writes rather than constituting an unlimited free database.

Features and benefits

  • Permanent Free plan has no monthly fee or required card, 100 CU-hours/project, 1 GB database storage/project, 20 GB total account storage and 5 GB egress/project.
  • Launch compute is $0.106/CU-hour and storage $0.35/GB-month; compute scales to zero after inactivity. Paid plans are usage-based with no monthly minimum.

Limitations

  • Free compute and egress limits can suspend compute until the next billing period; storage limits block writes rather than constituting an unlimited free database.
  • Storage, compute, branches, snapshots, restore history, egress, replicas, functions and object storage can be charged separately; paid usage is workload-dependent.
